How to Pause and Resume sync in OneDrive

OneDrive will automatically pause when a Windows PC enters battery saver mode, but if you want to stop syncing because you are on a metered or slow internet connection, you can Pause and Resume your sync.

Pausing and restarting OneDrive can also help if the status bar says “Processing changes” for an extended period of time.

To Pause syncing
  1. In the notification area to the far right of the taskbar, select the white or blue OneDrive cloud icon.

    Please keep in mind that you may need to click the Show hidden icons arrow. Show hidden icons as a button. to see the OneDrive icon next to the notification area OneDrive may not be running if the icon does not appear in the notification area. Choose Start, type OneDrive in the search box, and then choose OneDrive from the search results.

  2. In the activity center, select More > Pause syncing…
  3. Select whether you want to pause for 2, 8, or 24 hours, and make sure the white or blue OneDrive cloud icons in the notification area say Paused.

    Note: If you have both OneDrive and OneDrive for Business, you can pause and resume them independently.

To Resume syncing

Syncing will resume automatically after the Pause time has finished, or you can manually Resume syncing at any time.
